Vote yes on Question 3 to prevent cruelty to farm animals
A YES vote on Question 3 -- on November's ballot -- would prevent cruelty to farm animals. Unfortunately, George Moore's recent letter to the editor included a great deal of misinformation on this matter.
Question 3 is a modest measure that would give egg-laying hens, breeding pigs and veal calves enough space to spread their limbs and turn around. Mr. Moore claims that Question 3 is unnecessary, but there are actually -- and currently -- thousands of animals kept in cages in Massachusetts that can't engage in these basic movements.
Farm inspections do not address severe confinement. Also, Mr. Moore's statement that the MSPCA and Animal Rescue League of Boston regulate and inspect farms in Massachusetts is not true.
Question 3 will prevent animal cruelty and establish modest sales standards in the Commonwealth. It is supported by our groups as well as food safety organizations, more than 100 family farmers, 500 veterinarians and civil leaders across the state.
The MSPCA and Animal Rescue League of Boston urge a yes vote on Question 3 on Nov. 8.
